What is the Dutch Easter like? ~オランダのイースター~

Today is the Easter day. In Japan, we don’t have Easter. So what do we know about it…? Well, colorful eggs or chocolate Easter bunny? Actually, it is a religious holiday. Wikipedia says “Easter is a festival and holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead“. I was very curious to know what Easter is like in the Netherlands, so my Dutch friend Fleur answered my questions.

今日（4月12日）はイースターでした！イースターと言えばカラフルな卵とかチョコレートのウサギなんかのイメージがありますが、もともとはキリストの復活を祝う宗教行事。今回、オランダではどんなふうにイースターを過ごすのか気になったのでオランダ人の友達Fleurに聞いてみました！

Chisaki; What kind of day is Easter for Dutch people?

イースターってオランダ人にとってどんな日なん？

Fleur; It depends on the person I think what it means. It is a religious holiday. Around Easter time, Johan Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is performed a lot. A group of celebrities performs it outside in a big production every year.

まぁ人によるかな。宗教行事だし。あとは、バッハの「マタイ受難曲」がテーマソングみたいになってるんだけど、The Passionていう有名人がたくさん出る大きな野外イベントで演奏されたりしてるよ。

Chisaki; How do people celebrate Easter?

みんなイースターをどうやってお祝いするん？

Fleur; Easter is originally religious but it’s also with the Easter bunny (paashaas in Dutch) which hides eggs and stuff. This is not something Dutch children grew up to believe in. It’s just a symbol for Easter.

もともとは宗教行事だけど、”イースターバニー”もあるね。卵とかいろんなものを隠すの。これは信仰に関係なくて、ただのシンボル。

Chisaki; Oh, so the Easter bunny is not something that came from the religion?

あ、イースターエッグは宗教と関係ないんや？

Fleur; No. Children also enjoy painting eggs. You empty the white eggs so they only have the shell and then you can paint all over it.

うん、ないよ。あとは、卵をペイントするのも子どもの楽しみ。卵の中身を空にしてから塗るんだよ。

Chisaki; Sounds fun! So what do you usually do on the Easter day?

楽しそう！Fleurは何をするの？

Fleur; I have a “paasontbijt” breakfast, where me and my family have nice food and eat together. It’s something like this.

家族と一緒に”paasontbijt”という朝ごはんを食べるよ。こんな感じ。

Chisaki; Looks fancy! Do you have any special foods for Easter?

めっちゃ豪華！イースター用の食べ物とかってある？

Fleur; We have Easter eggs (chocolate) and “matzes” which I think is originally Jewish. It’s a sort of cracker with butter and sugar. Also, you can eat “paasstol”(Dutch Easter fruit bread), “suikerbrood”(sugar bread) and “duivekater”(Northern Dutch Easter bread). Look at the pictures.

イースターエッグ（という名のチョコレート）と、matzesっていうバターと砂糖で食べるクラッカーかな。これはもともとユダヤ文化から来てるんだと思う。それから、シュトーレンみたいなフルーツブレッド、シュガーパン、北部で有名なイースターのパン、などもあるよ。
